Panleukopenia:

Also called feline parvo, feline distemper, cat plague and several others.
This is a virus that is contact spread. So your cat can become exposed by contact with a carrier cat or any surface that has been contaminated by the carrier cat. Fleas can also spread the disease. It is an extremely resilient virus that can survive freezing and up to 133 degrees, and under ideal conditions up to 13 months. There is no specific test for it at your veterinarian. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and death. Kittens are hit particularly hard and have an extremely high mortality rate. Adult cats that survive the virus may become carriers and spread the disease. How do you stop the problem? Vaccinate your cats! The disease is preventable with proper care of your pet and following your veterinarian’s health care plan. Keep your cat indoors. Cats do not need to roam outside. Indoor cats are healthier and make better pets. How can you clean an area or item that been exposed to an infected cat? Water mixed with 10% bleach. Saturate the area and leave set for no less than 15 minutes. Porous items such as blankets should be discarded.
While this disease is a killer, there is no reason for alarm.
Remember, simply make sure your cats are vaccinated and kept indoors!
Responsible pet care can prevent so many deaths every year. If you are going to own a pet, stop and ask yourself if you are able and willing to provide for the expense of the vet care and provide the time for supporting the pet’s social needs. If you cannot say yes to both of these questions, you are NOT in a position to own a pet. And finally, have your pets spayed or neutered.
